Scientists discover that Alzheimer’s disrupts circadian rhythms
of plaque-clearing brain cells
A new study in mice from Washington University Medicine discovers a link between the accumulation of amyloid plaque, the progression of Alzheimer’s, and disruptions in the circadian system — the body’s internal clock that controls our sleep and wake cycle. The findings, published October 23 in Nature Neuroscience, suggest that controlling or correcting these circadian rhythms could be a potential way to treat the disease.
Mental exercise can reverse a brain change linked to aging, study finds
A new study finds that cognitive training can increase the levels of a key chemical messenger in the brain responsible for decision-making, and reverse a process associated with aging. Certain types of cognitive training appeared to turn back the clock by about 10 years. By measuring levels of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that’s closely associated with cognitive performance, scientists were able to determine what kind of brain training is the most effective.

Scientists now call Alzheimer’s disease “Type 3 diabetes.” What’s the link between Alzheimer’s and diabetes? Well, new research shows insulin resistance, sometimes called “diabesity” (from eating too many carbs and sugar and not enough fat), is one of the major factors that starts the brain-damage cascade that robs the memory of millions of people.
