Combining Lifestyle Factors for a Healthier Brain

Research shows that combining two or more lifestyle factors can have a synergistic effect on brain health. A study in Germany compared the effects of an 18-month specially designed dance program that required participants to constantly learn new choreographies against a traditional health fitness training program of mainly repetitive exercises. Participants were learning new steps, socializing with others, and getting exercise through dance. At the end of the study, participants in both groups showed increases in the volume of the hippocampus region of the brain — a region critical for memory consolidation. However, the dance group showed greater increases in volume as well as improved balance. Another study of Japanese men and women with an average age of 76 who exercised with others compared to those who exercised alone had a lower risk of dementia as well.

Studies have also looked at the combination of cognitive training and motor training (known as dual-task training) and found that each has benefits, but together they have a greater impact on cognition. In another study, resistance training and cognitive training together were shown to increase brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and enhance cognition. People who engage in both types of activities

typically have higher functionality and a better quality of life as well. Nutrition, exercise, sleep, mental stimulation, social interaction, and managing stress are crucial for a healthy brain, no matter what our age. When we are young, these components of our lives may seem to come naturally, and combining these activities can also be fun and challenging. As we age, however, many people start to have

deficits in one or more areas and have to work harder at keeping their lives in balance.
